Professional Mentoring and Workplace Coaching Skills (PMWCS)

Completion of this course and the assessment requirements provides you with an NZQA approved Micro-credential, registered on the National Qualifications Framework:

NZQA Micro-credential (127349-1) Level 7, 15 credits

In accordance with NZQA regulations, this qualification is available to NZ or Australian citizens or NZ residents. An NZCMC certificate is available for those who don’t meet these criteria.

This course provides a thorough introduction to coaching and mentoring plus the tools and skills you need to lead powerful conversations and start working with clients as a coach or mentor. The 5 day experience (plus half day peer group supervision workshop) provides time to build both your skills and confidence in the role. Through readings and discussion with professional coaches, you learn the ethics of coaching and enough about the psychology of the change process to ensure you take a professional approach with the people you work with. You walk away with a full toolkit, a heap of resources plus the confidence to know you have the essentials of professional practice covered.

It is designed for people who want to move in to significant coaching or mentoring roles, for leaders who want to deepen their one to one coaching conversations, for those who co-ordinate mentoring programmes plus those who already have some experience and want to set themselves up as independent coaches.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically assess client needs and apply a selection of models, tools and skills to the role of the workplace coach or mentor in a variety of professional scenarios 

  2. Establish and manage ethical and professional coaching/mentoring relationships using current theory and practice  

  3. Interpret and apply contemporary theory and research to coaching/mentoring practice 

  4. Critically reflect on own and others’ practice against core competencies specified by professional bodies in the sector (International Coach Federation, European Mentoring & Coaching Council)

On this course you will learn how to

  • Define coaching and mentoring and adopt a coaching mindset

  • Identify the limits and boundaries to the roles.

  • Create positive environments for coaching and mentoring

  • Explore a range of models for coaching and mentoring

  • Avoid the 8 most common pitfalls 

  • Use intentional and skilful questioning 

  • Use reflective listening to deepen rapport and facilitate reflection

  • Use feedback effectively in the process

  • Negotiate a contract with a client

  • Manage a coaching or mentoring session with a client

  • Use a range of structured tools to facilitate learning and reflection

  • Use creative approaches to facilitate insight and understanding.

  • Discuss ethical issues for coaches & mentors and function within a professional code of ethics

  • Demonstrate consistently the personal skills and attributes of a competent coach or mentor

  • Identify your own learning style and adapt your approach to meet the needs of different clients.

ICF CORE COMPETENCIES

The course covers the International Coach Federation’s (ICF) core competencies and provides the 60, coach specific training hours required to satisfy the training requirements for membership of ICF and accreditation through a portfolio application as an Associate Certified Coach.

POWER OF PEER SUPERVISION INCLUDED

This programme includes enrolment in The Power of Peer Supervision workshop post course (value $325) where you will have the opportunity to form a peer supervision group with participants from the coaching course to support your ongoing professional development post course.

The course can be invoiced over four instalments if preferred for those funding their own course of study.

Affiliation with a professional body is also available through the European Mentoring & Coaching Council who have an Asia Pacific branch. Their membership and accreditation requirements can be found at emcc.org.uk

Course Requirements

80% attendance requirement and assessment will involve reflective activities and delivering and evaluating live coaching or mentoring sessions with clients and peers. There are required readings associated with this course which will be supplied in a comprehensive resource pack prior to the course.
